Why is it called gunpowder?
This experimental medicine origin of gunpowder is reflected in its Chinese name huoyao (Chinese: 火药/火藥; pinyin: huŏ yào /xuo yɑʊ/), which means “fire medicine”. Saltpeter was known to the Chinese by the mid-1st century AD and was primarily produced in the provinces of Sichuan, Shanxi, and Shandong.

We don’t put gunpowder in guns and haven’t since the 19th Century. Modern firearms from the 1880s onward use smokeless powder cartridges with the powder inside the cartridge case rather than loaded separately from the bullet. That powder is ignited when the primer is struck by the firing pin.
